Tune Up Your Driving Habits Or Change Your Lifestyle

The cost of gas keeps rising and it will most likely continue to increase. Now, is the time to think about how much money you want to spend at the gas pump. Here are some things to think about that will not only increase your car's fuel efficiency, but may help create a sustainable lifestyle for the future.

* Buy a New Car

Are you driving a gas guzzler? Do you need that big SUV? Really evaluate your needs versus your wants. Most of us also have to be realistic with our budgets. While there our more hybrid cars out there, the costs have not yet come down significantly. If you can afford a hybrid, then great, buy one. If a hybrid doesn't fit into your budget yet, shop around for the smallest, most fuel efficient car for your needs. Then start a savings plan to set aside money for that hybrid car down the road.

* Change Your Driving Habits to Reduce Gas

Make sure your car is tuned up.
If your car labors on the hills, or your engine lacks pep then you may need a complete tune up. Take your car in for regular maintenance, especially for oil changes. A sluggish engine uses more gas.

Don't drive with road rage.
With today's busy lifestyles, we are often in a hurry to get to our destinations. Relax, enjoy the journey, and always drive the recommended speed limit. Take time to smell the roses, drive easily and steadily. Revving up and quick stops just use up more gas and don't really get you there any quicker. It's also dangerous and can increase your stress levels. If you have to spend time in the car, make good use of the time. Listen to your favorite music or download books to your mp3 from your favorite library.

Use your air conditioning when it's really hot.
Believe it or not, the newer vehicles are designed to be aerodynamically efficient, with the windows closed. Therefore, when the windows are open, you are using more gas.

Keep your tires inflated correctly.
Improperly inflated tires decrease gas efficiency. Buy a tire gauge and keep it in your car to check your tire's air pressure. It's easy to do and can save you money.

Use cruise control on long trips.
This will keep your speed constant and steady and reduce the amount of gas that is used. Keep the speed at the speed limit and not greater and this will use less gas, and keep you from getting a ticket. Most accidents are caused by excessive speed. Here, is another time to relax and enjoy the ride. Don't let other drivers get on your nerves.

* Give up your car?

Can you do it? Can you make that major lifestyle change?

Here we go, can you make any of these changes? Now or in the future to help create a sustainable lifestyle for yourself or your kids and grand kids?

Carpool
It's not easy. Many of us like to be in control of when we come and go. But, maybe it's worth the inconvenience. Carefully evaluate the money you will save. You, also may be able to control the time you spend at work. It's better not to work too much overtime and spend more time with your family. You kids will be happier and less likely to get into trouble.

Ride a bicycle to work.
Wow, there are people who do this, everyday. Believe it or not, it can be done. If you live in a city or small town, riding a bicycle to work is a very viable option. Maybe you can't commit to it everyday, but maybe you could commit to once or twice a week. You will improve your health and decrease the amount of gas you use.

* Sell your house and move closer to work.

Another option to think about.

* Work from home.

Can you telecommute with your current employer. More and more companies are reaping the benefits of employees telecommuting. Not only are you increasing the amount of time you have, but your employer is reducing some overhead. You may also think about starting your own business from home. There are many work at home options today.

We spend a lot of money on gas and on maintaining our cars. And, it will keep increasing along with the cost of living. Simple changes in driving habits can help you reduce those cost now. However, re-evaluating where you live and how you make an income are vitally important in creating a sustainable lifestyle for the future.
