If you're considering ways of saving petrol to reduce your fuel costs, then looking at ways of driving more wisely will allow you to extract more miles from every gallon of petrol/gas or diesel that you purchase at the pump station.
High fuel consumption is quite literally draining money away from motorists these days with the escalating costs of filling up the gas tank to run your vehicle. The fuel price seems to rise almost every week now and each visit to the pump station costs more money.
Let's look at some things that can rob you of your precious mpg?
Short journeys.
Short journeys especially in built up areas waste fuel, especially if the engine is constantly being started from cold. In the winter it is even worse because more choke is needed to overcome the freezing temperatures.
To constantly start a vehicle from cold requires a fuel rich mixture which uses up more of your precious petrol/gas or diesel. A cold, standing car or truck is using fuel while you are travelling nowhere.
An engine will happily run more efficient all day long at an even speed while at normal operating temperature, but getting to this economical point is where you use a lot of fuel.
With this in mind it is best to use your car less if possible or at least try to avoid well known congested routes.
Traffic jams.
Traffic in built up areas wastes a lot of fuel due to the constant stopping and starting, or while waiting at traffic lights with the engine running. Just think how many miles you could do on an open road with this same amount of fuel that is being wasted in this particular scenario.
Rush hour traffic is even worse.
Rush hour is even worse for this. Have you ever considered leaving for work or back home a little bit earlier or later to miss this traffic? Even ten or fifteen minutes can make a huge difference. A slightly different travel time can sometimes mean that you just breeze along the same road, where normally you would get snarled up.
Then there is the school run traffic.
At certain times of the day around schools, this traffic can be quite horrendous. If you can pass through these areas slightly before or after this window of congestion you will have a much more easy passage and it won't cost you any money in wasted fuel.
