Traffic jams.
Traffic in built up areas wastes a lot of fuel due to the constant stopping and starting, or while waiting at traffic lights with the engine running. Just think how many miles you could do on an open road with this same amount of fuel that is being wasted in this particular scenario.

Rush hour traffic is even worse.
Rush hour is even worse for this. Have you ever considered leaving for work or back home a little bit earlier or later to miss this traffic? Even ten or fifteen minutes can make a huge difference. A slightly different travel time can sometimes mean that you just breeze along the same road, where normally you would get snarled up.

Then there is the school run traffic.
At certain times of the day around schools, this traffic can be quite horrendous. If you can pass through these areas slightly before or after this window of congestion you will have a much more easy passage and it won't cost you any money in wasted fuel.

Tip #2 Switch Off Those Electrics

Before starting your engine, especially in the winter months, be sure to switch off electrical systems first which may have been left on from the last journey, such as heated rear shields/screens and radios. Also turn down your heater fan settings to a lower level.

These all place more strain on the battery for starting which could result in using up a little more fuel before the engine actually fires up. The starter motor consumes a lot of energy from the battery to turn over the engine for starting, so with other electrical items turned off or down, the battery has an easier job of directing the power to the starter meaning you can be on your way sooner.

Of course there is more strain anyway in the winter as the cold, freezing temperatures make the engine tighter initially anyway, due to the oil becoming thicker until it warms up.

So less current drawn from the battery for starting, helps the engine to fire up more easily, plus a smaller, more economical car means that you save petrol at the pump station.

Yes you've probably heard it all before, save on gas, save on petrol, reduce emissions, but how do you do that, when fuel prices keep going up. You need to concentrate on more fuel economy.
